Forest

$6.00

Often at night in the forests of the old country a blood-chilling cry can be heard, which is alleged to proceed from the Forest Spirits who ever haunt the woods. Among the deities who presided over the destinies of the ancient peoples was a special god of the forest named Leshy, to whom all the wild flora and fauna of the weald belonged. To this sylvan entity every hunter had to appeal for permission before he or she ventured to slay any wild creatures, and fine offerings would entice Leshy to drive the game into the hunter's path. If such oblations were not supplied, the hunter might find themselves wandering in circles on a moonless night, their well-trodden path having mysteriously vanished.

Leshy can take many forms, but always appears clad in bark and soft lichens. His bones and tendons are akin to sinewy roots and branches and his antlers are wound through with looping vines. His back is covered with a dense colony of all kinds of mushrooms, some of which glow softly with inner light at night. If he is not called upon, he spends most evenings in perfect stillness, wooden sword in hand, indistinguishable from the trees around him but for the periodic wisps of steam from his nostrils. He surveys his domain with an impartial eye, only intervening to preserve the natural balance of living things.

At times he can be caught sowing mushrooms from his back into the freshly dead to hasten their decomposition, and other times he prefers to gently shake the boughs of trees to drop their fruit. If you catch a glimpse of him while foraging, be sure to leave a selection of the best nuts and berries for Leshy.
