…Or: SOMEONE ELSE’S FAVORITE

When I told Rui I liked motorcycles, he lit up. Well, we already had a good rapport going, an assumed professional respect of artist to artist. I liked that. He didn’t know I was making everything up as I went along. Or maybe he did, maybe he was too, maybe he didn’t care. I can only report on what I experienced, not what might have been going through his head. He told me his dad and his uncles loved riding back in Luanda, and the Ténéré was legendary among them for the punishment it could take on their roads. Did he ride? No, I can barely walk, he said with a laugh. He had Charlie Browned it on the slick paving stones of Lisbon his first day and was on crutches for basically the entire month. It wasn’t so bad, though, he said. He could still get around on tuk tuks, which were kind of like motorcycles anyway when you think about it. The other day I went on a three hour tour, he said, where the guide explained the hidden history of Lisbon. African princes, diplomats, and engineers helped the Moors and many reached the heights of political power, the guide said. Fado used to have a dance with it, too. The hidden side of the city fascinated Rui and in turn fascinated me. We’re a million miles from the end of Europe, yet we still speak their language, why in the world is that the case, Rui asked. We didn’t know, and drank more gin.
