Luna 3

We want to be very fucking clear : There is NO “dark side” of the moon. There is however a F A R S I D E of the moon and it's mostly named after Soviet heroes---not Gary Larson cows. Since the moon is in a tidally locked orbit of the Earth (read: one revolution equals one orbit) the same side always faces our home. There’s day and night on the moon, just like on Earth, although the cycle is much-much-much (science term) longer.
The Luna 3 was the first human probe to take a picture of this F A R S I D E and send it back to Earth. Spoiler: the photos sucked BUT they did allow the initial mapping of larger features.
Pretty neat right? Turns out Pink Floyd was wrong. Guess we shouldn't take out astronomy knowledge from the great stoner albums of the '70s.
Luna 3 is all about sharing the things that are waay out there.
