Sailing
Hard over on an upwind beat, squinting aloft, poised over the winch, this is where I want to be.
Someone is asking if I want an Oland’s and a tunafish sandwich from Julien’s. Yes, of course I want those, we’re 182 minutes in and beating upwind on the perfect line to single tack the penultimate mark.
Nothing left but to keep the trim, hold the line, hang the rail meat, and pass out snacks. We’re 23 minutes, since the last mark, ahead of the nearest boat and it’s tight as hell. We give up 21 minutes with our handicap.
Honestly, no one on the crew cares, we could give up 30 minutes and still make it work. 3 meter beam, 58‘ waterline, a full keel, and a 12 meter rig… no one can catch us.
The sun is low and the breeze has shifted and picked up. We round the last mark and I trim fast as I can. I’m pretty sure I knocked over my beer but it’s ok. We’ve rolled onto our heading, surfing down wind to the finish.
The chute is up and looks prefect, I’m letting the main out slow and it feels as if everything has suddenly gone still. We’re moving with the wind. Someone hands me a fresh beer and the boat relaxes.
It’s straight in from here, all we can do is keep trim and run as fast as the wind will let us. 25 minutes later the next boat rounds behind us and we all let out a cheer.
It’s our race to win and there’s nowhere I’d rather be than on Hayseed IV.
