Mountain River

$6.00

Moon so bright one could read by it’s glow.

The day had been long and hot and they’d spent the better part of it too deep in the bushes and scrub. The kind that scratch you up and make you sweat. The kind that calves like to hide in. The sort that you need to move slowly through because it’s already summer and the rattlesnakes are sunning where they can.

It took hours to find the last straggling calf. It was making a racket up top a long run of scree, deep into a ravine. They’d had to leave their ponies and collect it on foot. The sun was setting when they finally made it down from the high valley.

The rest of the mob was long gone; following the river, down the mountain, over the foot hills, and all tucked into the yards at the main ranch.

Too late to catch the herd, they pushed the calves to the old homestead. It’s small yard, wood stove, and long summer porch, their home for the night. The calves secured in the yard, quietly feeding on the overgrown clovers, occasionally poking their curious heads through the empty, glassless, windows.

Now, they sat under the moon, the hills spread out below, bright as day and nothing but night. A small moment that lasts a lifetime. More than enough glow to sketch the scene and write a letter [or a greeting card] capturing the moment, sharing it best they can.
