"Ash peered over the side of his DH-4 biplane. Icy alpine prop blast bit at his cheeks. Little village lights winked at him between the moonlit peaks.

His pursuit had turned back at dusk and now he was alone in the alps. He could imagine them now. All warm, red faced, and on the ground back in their cozy hut. The one he used to share. Their fat little wood stove bathing them in drowsy warmth. He remembered how the room would glow, yellow and orange, holding the night at bay.

For a moment he was tempted to turn back, say it was all a mistake. No, he wasn’t AWOL, just misunderstood orders is all. Then he thought of Teddy and Siberia. He knew what was going to happen, even if it meant being icy, windswept, completely frozen through. Minor challenges of an epic quest.

The moon had saved him that night. It’s glow turning every peak into a radiant white beacon.

"Stay away, Stay away, Stay away," they twinkled as he wove between them.

He had neither a map nor light to read one by, but he had made this alpine flight before. Ash did his best to stay on track, it was familiar land and he rarely forgot the path of his travels. Something of a talent he supposed. Even though, several times he ventured down the wrong valley and needed to wheel 'round and back, wasting fuel and time.

Despite every natural hardship and the constant bite of nature, more than once he found himself thinking there was no moment like this and no place he’d rather be.

The sun was rising when he finally cleared the mountains and began his descent into Italy.”
